Instructions
1
Upgrade your mobile modem's firmware. Having the latest version of the mobile's firmware can strengthen its signal, as well as fix bugs and improve its system functionality for better performance. The mobile modem manufacturer's website will typically have the firmware available if it does not provide over-the-air updates.
2
Go to an area that offers the best network capability for your mobile Internet modem. These are typically known as hot spots, and some manufacturers like AT&T offer 3G network in certain districts. Check the company provider's website or call their customer service line to find out the hot-spot locations nearest you.
3
Move your mobile modem device closer to an open space or a higher elevation, such as a window or upstairs. Walls are one of the factors that hamper Internet signal strength and, therefore, lower your speed.
4
Attach a signal booster antenna onto your mobile modem's antenna jack (see "Additional Resources," below, for a link to a visual sample). These devices can assist in amplifying the reach of your modem and access farther networks that it could not normally connect to without a signal booster.
5
Use your mobile Internet device during off-peak hours. These off-peak hours include after 11 p.m. and before 6 a.m. During this time there is less network traffic, so your connection will be stable and less prone to lag issues.
